Test Engineer, Nefab West, Newark, CA

Nefab Group is on a growth journey, and we are dependent on high-performance people to succeed. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Test Engineer to join our team in Newark, CA.

The Packaging Test Engineer is responsible for planning and conducting various tests, such as mechanical shock and environmental assessments, in line with industry standards. This role involves working with clients to define test requirements, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing reports. The engineer also ensures the lab meets certification standards, develops test plans, and provides quotes for testing services. Additionally, they handle the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab equipment and assist in building necessary fixtures.

Job Summary

As the Test Engineer, you will:

  • Conduct package tests in accordance with industry standards such as ISTA, ASTM, and customer specifications.
  • Perform material tests, including plywood strength, foam creep, ESD materials and properties, Mullen burst, and edge crush (ECT) tests.
  • Perform all package and material testing with minimal assistance.
  • Complete and submit formal test reports.
  • Maintain test records and test reports in accordance with Nefab standards.
  • Manage internal technical documentation and test standards.
  • Design and produce fixtures and jigs for testing, with support from the production team when needed.
  • Maintain records of all laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure all test equipment is in calibration.
  • Ensure laboratory ISTA certification is maintained and renewed biennially.
  • Ensure laboratory ISO 17025 accreditation is maintained and renewed.
  • Support R&D in the development of new test processes and procedures, design concepts, materials, and tests.

 

Your Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering, industrial design, packaging technology, or similar engineering background.
    • Alternatively, five years of work experience in testing products and/or packaging can replace a bachelor’s degree.
  • Packaging Dynamics Professional (ISTA PDP) certification or Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional (CPLP) through ISTA preferred but not required.
  • Minimum 3 years of previous working laboratory experience preferred, ideally in conducting product/packaging testing.
  • Knowledge of test standards for packaging and transportation industries (ISTA, ASTM, NEBS, etc.).
  • Technical knowledge of packaging materials and packaging design is a plus
  • Competency with power tools, hand tools, and other production machinery
  • Hands-on and proactive, ready to build fixtures and prototypes as needed
  • Experience with maintenance and preventative maintenance of test equipment.
  • Possess a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and general computer literacy.
  • Fast learner and ability to communicate clearly.
  • High focus on customer service, and willing to go above and beyond to get the job done.
  • Ability to find innovative solutions to complex problems.
